Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa

(Subclass 870)

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870) –

Do you want to bring your parent to Australia?

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870) is a three to five year temporary visa that allows a parent of an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident to stay in Australia.

Features of Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870)

This is a 3 or 5 year visa but successful applicants may be permitted to stay in Australia for a maximum of 10 years, if they are eligible to apply for a second visa.

Visa holders can enter and leave Australia as many times as they like during the validity of their visa permit.

If an applicant applies for a second Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870) they will be required to leave Australia 90 days before submitting their application. However, the sponsor can request that the applicant lodge onshore if there are compelling circumstances.

This visa does not have work rights.

Main Criteria

To be eligible the applicant must:

  • have a child who is an Australian citizen, or an Australian permanent resident, and who has been lawfully resident in Australia; and
  • have an approved sponsor; and
  • lodge their visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval.

You must be sponsored by an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident. Your sponsor needs to have been living lawfully in Australia for at least two years before you apply for this visa. For most applicants, your child or your child’s spouse or de facto partner will need to sponsor you.   Your sponsor will need to pass an income test.

There are strict sponsorship obligations attached to this visa, such as the provision of financial support and accommodation, and paying back all outstanding public health debts.

It is important for your sponsor to obtain professional advice before applying.
