Australian Global Business and Talent Attraction Taskforce

The Australian Government announced on 4th  September 2020 that they have established a new whole-of-government taskforce with the aim of targeting high-value businesses and exceptionally talented individuals from across the globe to relocate to Australia. The key objective for the task force is to create jobs for Australians as the country seeks to recover from the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. The acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs Alan Tudge said:

“Australia has done remarkably well both in terms of our management of the health crisis, and the economic crisis which have both impacted the globe on a massive scale. Australia’s statistics, compared to other advanced countries, set us apart and shows our sound, consistent and well thought through health and economic management.

Australia is the best place to live, work and do business – we’re capitalising on this with the appointment of senior business leader Peter Verwer AO as the head of the taskforce, to be the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Global Business and Talent Attraction.

The taskforce will bring together experts from across the Commonwealth (including Austrade and Home Affairs), States and Territories as well as the private sector, aligning with the Government’s JobMaker plan. We will be leveraging our networks abroad, including the Australian diaspora, to help identify opportunities.

The initial focus will be on three key sectors: advanced manufacturing, financial services (including FinTech) and health. Importantly, however, the taskforce will be nimble and opportunistic in seeking to achieve the best outcome in the national interest. A range of specifically tailored measures at the Commonwealth and State and Territory level will be available on a case by case basis to attract and relocate high value businesses and exceptional talent to our shores”.
