Reciprocal health care agreements between Australia and other countries are of immense benefit to people from those countries by allowing them to gain access to Medicare while in Australia in circumstances where they would not otherwise have such access. An example are applicants for onshore parent and contributory parent visas who are denied access to Medicare while their applications are being processed because the definition of “Australian resident “in Section 3 of the Health Insurance Act. http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/hia1973164/s3.html
However contributory parent and parent visa applicants from countries with reciprocal health care agreements can obtain access to Medicare through those agreements. Every agreement is different and below are links to information:
